Trend Watch – Word Play

Brace yourself for a wild literary ride, because today’s post is all about punny word play! So many stamp designers have jumped on the bandwagon to produce stamp sets that use plays on words and puns to convey adorable messages. I had a hard time narrowing down my list for this post and found myself smiling as I looked at these cards. Hopefully these puns will bring a bright spot to your day!

Speaking of “bright spots,” Jody’s card using My Favorite Things’ “Watt’s Up?” stamp set really showcases that adorable lightbulb die!

Simon Says Stamp sells this great “Best Fishes” stamp set, and Pamela’s card is incredible! She made a shaker card that is clear on both sides, so you can see through to the fish in the bowl, with little glittery rocks for the bottom of the bowl in the front. What an amazing card!

Keep It CASual #4: Bright Lights Big City Card

Happy Monday everyone! Welcome to another Keep it CASual – our new video tutorial series featuring clean and simple card making.

For today’s card I used some brand new stamps from Hero Arts / Basic Grey.

I created a sponged background using 3 different colors of Tim Holtz Distress Inks and an ink applicator tool. I tried to create a look of the sun starting to go down over a big city. For the stars I used a clear embossing paste through my Simon Says Stamp Falling Stars stencil sprinkled with my clear sparkle embossing glitter from Wow! Embossing. Because the embossing paste dries clear the effect is very subtle. It looks so beautiful in real life.

Fancy Pants Designer – Kim Watson

Today we welcome Kim Watson. We are so excited to have her showcase her work today on Paper Crafter’s Library. You can see Kim’s super cute Christmas brag book below, but first, here is a little more about her:

Kim Watson lives on a mountainside with her family, in a beautiful seaside suburb just outside of Cape Town, South Africa. She is married to her best friend who is ever patient with her need to mess with paper and glue, as well as have a camera present whenever possible. Her sweet children and life next to the ocean, surrounded by nature give her an endless source of content for her pages, which she describes as being full of texture, layers, color and, of course, her trademark stitching. Kim has been working with Fancy Pants Designs for 4 years as well as many other manufacturers in the scrapbooking industry over the years, including 5 years as a Dream Team member for Paper Crafts & Scrapbooking Magazine. Kim loves more than anything knowing that the time and love put into her pages will help her children remember how good their childhoods are and that even the ‘not so good times’ leave us with lessons learned and wisdom gained.

Simple Christmas Brag Book

Today I am excited to show you how to make a simple mini-book using Fancy Pants Designs Oh! Deer Christmas collection. The beauty of this design is it requires no stitching & can be completed in an afternoon.

STEP #1: Using a frame, place a piece of Vellum Paper behind it to create an translucent ‘window’. Decorate it with ephemera, punched snowflakes and a die-cut bow (see HERE for cut file)

STEP #2: Decorate & prepare a selection of Brag Cards & Decorative Frames to be used as ‘pages’ in your mini book for photographs & journaling.

STEP #3: Print out photos. Most of mine were 2″x3″ to fit behind the frames.

STEP #4: Punch each page at the top left corner for inserting a twine tie.

STEP #5: Tie all your pages together with some sturdy twine, making sure to tie it loose enough to be able to turn the ‘pages’.

Trend Watch – Going Wild for Woodland Critters

These critters are just perfect. In real life, they may be a bit intimidating but when you can stamp them or use them on patterned paper, they can add just a little bit of the outdoors to your paper projects. We have seen so many of these woodland creatures lately, I just had to show you some of my favorite ones. I am not sure if Katy Perry started it but when she asks in her song, “What does the fox say…?” these guys just keep getting cuter and cuter. But I still haven’t heard what they say.

This sweet faced fox from Amy is such a cutie and is perfect to work with your alcohol ink pens.

Debby always does such a good job on her cards and I think she outdid herself with adorable gift bag. Hedgehogs are so hot.

Squirrels are usually so busy but this card uses awesome bold fall colors in the die cut leaf background so the squirrel can be the neutral center piece. He is such a cutie.

I actually laughed out loud when I saw this little food holder from Mel. She filled it with nuts and check out the cheeks on the squirrel. Tell me that you think this one is as awesome as I do. Just love it.

The squirrels in my neighborhood are more like the sentiment in this card, a small gang of yard invaders, but they look so clever in this one. I think the guy on the right is actually a skunk. None of those in my yard but so cute on a card.

Keep It CASual #3: Harvest Thanks Card and PCL Member Highlights

Happy Monday everyone! Welcome to another Keep It CASual – a video series featuring Clean and Simple Card Making.

In today’s video I’m going to show you how I made this Harvest Thanks Card featuring a negative die cut technique. I also show you how you can add shading to your solid image stamps using sponge daubers.

I created this card using the new Fall Fest stamp set from Stampin’ Up!’s Holiday Mini Catalogue. Initially I bought this stamp set because I thought the little ghost was adorable, and there were so many different size options for the pumpkins along with all the face options to create jack-o-laterns.

The great thing about the stamp set though is that if you use the pumpkins as stand alone images you can create harvest and thanksgiving cards as well. Although Fall is one of my favourite times of year, and I love working with leaf images, after awhile I get tired of using leaves on cards – so this gave me something different to work with.

I also wanted to show you a behind-the-scenes sneak peek of some of the projects that were released to our members these past two weeks. We’ve put together a sneak peek you of just a few of the video tutorials & pdf handouts our members received during the weeks of October 20 – October 31, 2014.

Each week at Paper Crafter’s Library our monthly members can expect to receive access to a minimum of 5 exclusive videos each week. Typcially members receive upwards of 25 exclusive videos each month. Featured Artist/Designer: Libby Hickson

Welcome to another Featured Artist/Designer Spotlight. Today we’re thrilled to welcome Libby Hickson. Before we show you Libby’s project, let’s get to know her a little bit more…

Hi! I’m Libby and I’m so honored to be featured here on The Paper Crafter’s Library! I’m originally from Michigan, moved to Texas after college and now my family and I have settled outside of Atlanta, Georgia. While my husband works hard to support our family (and my addictive hobby!), I am a very busy PTA & soccer mom with my kids, who are in 1st & 3rd grades. I come from an extremely talented family of artists, musicians and theater people, but I never actually thought of myself as creative until I discovered scrapbooking and rubber stamping. As is the case for many stampers, it all began with an invitation to a Stampin’ Up party! I started my blog in April of 2007, never dreaming of the opportunities it would open for me. I’ve enjoyed my time on several design teams over the years, and currently work for Hero Arts as well as writing the monthly newsletter at i {heart} papers. Crafty Friends Card

Today I’m sharing a fun card I made featuring one of my favorite message stamps from Hero Arts – because really, crafty friends ARE the best of friends! I created a watercolored background, then stamped the message in white pigment ink and clear embossed. I distressed the edges of the watercolor paper and added sequins and little twine bows which tie in to the burlap paper in the background.

Our Graphic 45 Guest Designer for this week is Ginny Nemchak who is part of the 2014 Graphic 45 Design Team. You can see Ginny’s fabulous project below, but first, here is a little more about her:

I’m Ginny Nemchak and I live in a sweet little town out in the country with my husband of 21 years and 2 almost grown boys. I am convinced there there is no better living than out on a dirt road….it’s a very blessed life I have.

I have been crafting my whole life in some form…but my creative outlet is now focused on paper. I enjoy all types…layouts…mini albums…cards. I have recently discovered a new love for altered art and digital collage.

Graphic 45 has been my favorite paper company since I discovered it. I love all things vintage and shabby chic. They have so many fabulous patterns and you can mix and match between the line to get a very unique look! Anytime I can add ribbon and flowers and buttons I am a happy girl.
