Today we welcome back Ryn Tanaka. We are so excited to have her showcase her work today on Paper Crafter’s Library. You can see Ryn’s fabulous project below, but first, here is a little more about her:

RynTanakaProfilPic-250W-07012015Designs by Ryn is the manifestation of a dream that began a long time ago for me. I have always wanted to create a lifestyle that fits me and what I want out of my life. One that would allow me to create during working hours and give me the flexibility in my schedule to travel. For the longest time I wondered if something was wrong with me for not fitting into the multitude of ready made jobs that I tried.  It wasn’t until I attended a seminar at the Small Business Centre in London, Ontario that I realized that many of those misfit traits of mine were what they called entrepreneurial.

I was hooked by that idea but had absolutely no working knowledge of business.  The next few months I laboured over a business plan and submitted it to a program offered at the Centre – the Self Employment Benefit Program. To my absolute joy I was accepted!

I was given a foundation of business related workshops and an advisor – Gord Evans – who went over and above to help me with my project – a business that offered high quality rubber stamp designs based on my artwork. The beginnings of Designs by Ryn.

In order to have the flexibility of location that I wanted my store would need to be online. Never mind that I was almost completely technologically challenged and didn’t own a computer! The library computers just wouldn’t cut it so I walked into Staples and many questions later walked out with a laptop, printer and… A boyfriend?! Lol. That’s another story all together 😉

He became my “tech department” helping with the many issues that came with designing, printing and cutting my catalogues and product cards from home. I also bought a scroll saw – another foreign piece of machinery to me – determined to hand cut the stamps once mounted on cling-cushion. The first day I was in tears having destroyed at least half of my attempts but in time I learned.

The website went through several transformations which took a lot of time and patience. The delays forced me to focus on marketing to stores and at festivals. It wasn’t until early 2012 that at long last the new version of my site was released as a fully functioning store.

I am now thrilled to see my stamps getting international exposure. I have built a Design Team of 8 wonderfully kind and talented ladies who consistently create inspiring art using my designs – Alie Hoogenboezem-de Vries (Netherlands), Anja Hardenfels (Germany) Eileen Godwin (UK) Karin van den Broek (Netherlands), Kellie Murton (US), Miranda Degenaars (Netherlands), Shirley Deatcher (Canada) and Wendy McCarthy (UK). I also encourage customers to share their work by hosting a monthly Customer Creation Challenge on my blog. I find myself constantly delighted by what people make. The most inspiring part is that this business is allowing me to connect in a meaningful way to other creative individuals around the world.

Recently I have branched into offering Unmounted Rubber Sheets of my designs to stores and have also released a new line of Stencils. That dream of mine is slowly getting there. I am endlessly thankful to all of the people along the way who have purchased my products and supported me on this journey. Thank you 🙂

Embossed Hibiscus

I started off with embossing my Hibiscus stamps on Canson mixed media paper. Clear embossing powder seals the area that the designs are stamped on so that the designs remain white when coloured ink is added to the background.

The next step was to add some Dylusions Ink Sprays (Pure Sunshine, Fresh Lime and Postbox Red).

When dry, I stamped my raindrop designs (Water Effects 2) with black Versa Fine ink. Before adding the highlights I used my heat gun to dry the ink. Versa Fine takes a while to dry and you don’t want to smudge the image by trying to work with it when it’s still wet.

The individual Hibiscus flowers were embossed in white on scrap pieces of paper that I had painted earlier. When cutting them out I loosely followed the contour of the design’s outer edge. I then used a black Micron pen to fill the extra space. I did this to make my life easier when cutting out the designs and also to tie the flowers in with the black Raindrops.

Last steps were to pop some flowers up with adhesive foam, add rhinestones and darken the edges of the cards with black ink. Finished! Hope you like the end result 🙂

Trend Watch – Superheroes!

Superheroes are everywhere you turn these days, and the trend has carried over into the papercrafting world. These adorable heroes and their comic book-themed sentiments and accents are so in style!

Superheroes can be used for all kinds of different cards, and they can be masculine OR feminine! I bet you would be hard-pressed to find a holiday or occasion that didn’t lend itself to the use of a superhero card. I know this to be especially true at my house; my husband is a HUGE Avengers fan, so I’m always on the lookout for fun sets like this!

I have to say I had SUCH a hard time paring down my list of great cards. So many crafters out there have taken on this trend and made gorgeous cards!

Danielle used a great comic strip die by Papertrey Ink to great a background for this card that features some fun heroic phrases that would be sure to make anyone’s day super!

Maile made this fun mask and card that would be sure to make any girl smile! That’s what’s so great about superhero cards – a quick color swap and the card is great for the girl heroes in your life.

The superhero on Jill’s card is so cute, but he also looks very serious and ready for action! I like the star and embossed stitched circle in the background. They really provide a good backdrop for this little hero.

Debbie did such a great job coloring this little superhero with Copics. The blue rays coming out from behind our little girl hero really make her look set to save the world.

If you’re loving the idea of incorporating superheroes into your paper projects, but feeling like your collection is a bit inadequate, you can always improvise with what you have! I’m not usually one to want to self-promote, but this next card was one of the most fun cards I’ve ever produced, and it might give you some inspiration. I needed an Avengers card for a birthday party we were attending, so I did my best with the non-superhero supplies I had. Google images came in handy a lot as inspiration to get things like Thor and Iron Man to turn out close to accurate. See? You can make a superhero card out of supplies you already have!

Technique Talk: “Relax” Card Video Tutorial

Happy Friday everyone! Today I would like to share with you a new feature that I’m introducing to the PCL blog called “Technique Talk”. The purpose of this feature is to spotlight a variety of different stamping and card making techniques and demonstrate how to incorporate one or more of them into a finished card.

Depending on your interest level, at this point in time I am considering offering the “Technique Talk” as a regular feature on the PCL blog. So after reading the post and watching the video – please leave me a comment letting me know what you think!

Today’s “Relax” card is jam-packed with techniques! Here’s an overview of the techniques I incorporated into this card:

Using a MISTI

For those of you that are not familiar with the tool called MISTI – it stands for the “Most Incredible Stamping Tool Invented”. It is a stamp positioning tool invented by My Sweet Petunia – and I definitely have to give her props because it is indeed fabulous!  Although it is more of an investment than other stamp positioning tools that you may be familiar with (Stamp-a-ma-jig and the Fiskars Stamp Press) – it takes precision stamping to a whole new level.  I’ll be talking about the MISTI more in an upcoming “Tool Talk” segment (another new feature that will be making it’s appearance on the PCL blog).

In this video you’ll actually see me use the Fiskars stamp press in conjunction with the MISTI to apply a pattern to the sun image.

Kissing with Stamps

See the sun? This was originally a solid image stamp.  I inked it up in a yellow ink and then applied a pattern to it by stamping an alphabet background stamp directly onto it using an orange ink (all supplies listed at the bottom of this post). This is a super fun technique called Kissing with Stamps – you can create an endless variety of images with your existing stash simply by combining your solid image stamps with background pattern stamps.

Double Embossing over Dye Inks

The beauty of working with dye based inks for stamping is that they are quick drying. The downside is that because they dry so quickly you can not heat emboss with dye inks.  To solve this problem I stamped the sun image using VersaMark ink (a watermark ink that is slow drying and ideal for embossing) directly over top of the “Kissed” sun image and then heat embossed it with clear embossing powder. The MISTI was critical for helping me achieve perfect placement when stamping the second sun image directly over top of the first.

In terms of the double embossing – I wanted to be able to create a thicker, glossier embossed image.  In order to do so, while my first layer of embossing powder was still molten from the heat tool, I quickly sprinkled a second layer over top  – which stuck to the molten embossing powder – and heat embossed it.

Using Positive and Negative Masking 

To create my mask I used one of the Spellbinders Edgeabilites dies. I placed the scalloped die horizontally across my masking paper and die cut it using my Big Shot.  This created two masks – one with the scalloped border, and the second piece (the negative of the mask) with the inverted scalloped border.  I then used both those pieces to mask off segments of my card stock.

Sponging an Ombre Background using Dye Inks

The ombre effect was created by sponging on three different colors of dye ink using a mini ink blending tool.  The two intermediate colors – the second and fourth scallop up from the bottom – were created simply by deepening the color with additional sponged layers.

So now that I have given you an overview of the techniques incorporated into this card, here is a video tutorial for those of you that are visual learners and like to see it demonstrated.  It is on the longer side as this is an advanced level card.

Welcome to another Featured Artist/Designer Spotlight. Today we’re thrilled to welcome Christine Larson. Before we show you Christine’s project, let’s get to know her a little bit more…

I’m Chrissy and I’m a former officer in the U.S. Air Force.  My husband was also in the Air Force and often teases that I’m CINC (Commander In Chief) of the household because I keep things running and everyone takes their orders from me.  He has no idea how right he is!

I have three boys who I homeschool.  Needless to say, they keep me busy.  My solace in the day is my craft space and card making is how I unwind.  Little did I know when my mother introduced me to making cards in high school just how big a part of my life it would become.  I remember teasing her about her obsession with stamps and paper and now I’m 100x worse than she ever was.  I own and run the CAS(E) this Sketch (CTS) challenge blog and it should come as no surprise to you that I’m obsessed with sketches.

I enjoy sharing my crazy creations and ideas with you guys and I hope you enjoy my card for you today.

Awesome Card

I had a blast making this card for you guys today!  I made it for my cross fit trainer because he has taught me so much and he really is just AWESOME!  Ha ha.
 I decided to use this fun ombre background paper and layer a grid patterned sunburst die cut.  This die is made to wrap around a card so I did just that and I love how it looks.  Next, I cut my “Awesome” die in both yellow and teal cardstock to layer on my sunburst.  I offset the yellow just a bit to create a shadow of teal.  This really helped my sentiment not get lost in all the patterns. I then cut a “U” and “R” from my alphabet die and popped them up with some foam tape just above the “Awesome”.  I didn’t want to spell out the words “you” and “are” because I didn’t want to have them compete with the “Awesome”.  This worked out just right.  Finally, I added some cut chipboard asterisks, enamel dots, and bling.

Trend Watch – Birds

While writing I’m listening to the sound of happy birds singing in the spring and summer. It always give me a joyful feeling to hear them whistle. And while they’re singing their songs I’m looking at some beautiful pictures of birds. Some look like they could just fly away from my screen and others are more stylized. But they’re all beautiful, and that’s what this trend watch is all about: beautiful birds.

Let’s start with the two birds from Victorya. They’re singing a happy song, just like the real birds I’m listening to ;).

Another colorful example of a ‘birdday’ card is this card from Kate. I think every color would work with those birds.

There are even lovely bird dies available. I love how Kay used her watercolored papers to diecut this bird and the leaves.

Another great diecut example is this card from Maria. It’s a pretty intricate die and I love how she layered it with all the other diecuts.

I think most of us have already seen the crazy birds from Tim Holtz. I love those big eyes! And Heather did some amazing coloring which make the birds even more beautiful.

Kryssi created a fun card using the newly released Sunday Stroll stamp set from Mama Elephant. The initial concept of the card are little animals strolling around a circle, which would be the world. I loosely water colored the Earth on the inner watercolor card base. The circle was die cut with the circle cut from Sew Fancy CC. I colored the animals with Copic markers. Finally, the sentiment is from the Splendid stamp set.

KellyGriglioneProfilePhoto-250W-06182015Hi! I’m Kelly, and like many of us, crafting has always been a large part of my life. I have such fond memories of time spent with my Grandma at her kitchen table learning every type of craft imaginable.

I’m passionate about paper, both collecting it (19th century valentines/postcards/scrapbooks) and making things with it (cards/home decor/party decorations/scrapbooks).

I always love incorporating texture in my projects, and one medium that has a heck of a lot of texture is burlap. It’s something I reach for when I’m stuck on how to add more interest to a project. The challenge for me has been how to use burlap without the loose weave fraying and falling apart right away. I’d like to show you an easy way to work with burlap and even run it through your die cutting machine

Adhere a thin piece of cardstock to the burlap. Paper adhesive works just fine. You don’t need it to be a permanent bond.

Run it though a die-cutting machine. Since we’re working with fibers, I recommend using a metal adaptor pate underneath to help cut through the layers.

Amazingly, the die cut pulls away just like if it was paper.

The textured sentiment is perfect for a very simple card like this. The monochromatic, layered panels give some dimension, and then the sentiment can take center stage. My inclination is to touch the burlap since the cuts are so clean … it just seems like that’s not possible.

Here’s another card using die cut burlap. This one is going to my sister-in-law, whose name is Deb (as you might have guessed!) Putting the recipient’s name on a card is a super easy way to personalize it.

This two-layer die cut has the advantage of texture from the bottom, solid layer, and detail from the top, thinly cut layer. A paper adhesive is all it took to attach the cardstock to the burlap.

It’s fun to combine different finishes (burlap, sequins and gold foil) and patterns (text, stripes, dots).

I was working as a graphics,package,toy and theme parks designer in US 13 years. Then last company they sent me to Japan and worked with Sanrio to make 2 theme parks. At that time I met my husband and marriage then started live in Japan again lol. I was away from design work 20 years, but 4 years ago very fortunately I encountered Graphic 45 paper company and since then I was enjoying paper craft every day, sooner I started home class almost every week. I and my students are always happy together making paper arts. Also I was very honored to chosen a design team member of Graphic 45 2014-2015.This one year made me a Happiest artist on the World! Last month I had a show in Tokyo Design Festival.Thousand peoples was stop on my works and looked all details.They were so happy and smiled! I keep continue to make people’s happiness smile though my paper craft.Thank you so much!!

“MY DREAM SHOP”

Yes, my dream is to open a small paper craft shop and serve a little coffee and small buns.

I made all Furnitures by hand except a picture frame, 3 kitchen tools and the coffee set.On the roof top I add Gel medium and colored with gold powder. Size 6 “x 12″ x 11”
