Trendy Tuesday – It's About Time (Clocks)

Trendy Tuesday – It”s About Time…
by Katherine Elliot

The daylight savings time change is brutal where I live.  Changing the clock to “spring forward” an hour is never easy, at least when you have to get up early to walk the dog in the darkest hour of the morning to get ready for work.  So while I have felt sleep deprived for a week or so,  I had plenty of timely inspiration – clocks.  The traditional clock face makes a great background or focal point for your paper crafts.  Take a look at some of these options using a variety of stamp sets and embellishments for clock and time oriented project ideas…

Clock Works, StampinCard by Teneale Williams using Stampin” Up! sets, Clockworks and From the Heart, image source Teneale Williams.com

You can find many occasions to use clocks and time-oriented images and sentiments.  A variety of projects including diaries, journals, scrapbooks as well as cards offer lots of ways to explore your creativity in any time zone.

Add interest using metal clock face embellishments, like those from Prima Marketing and Tim Holtz Idea-ology.

Mix other metal embellishments with a traditional Roman numeral clock image and you have an instant, vintage inspired project with a chic twist.

Even the dreaded alarm clock looks attractive when used on a fun paper craft.  The birthday cards shown below use a classic alarm clock shape die from Sizzix.

Laura”s tag shown above also used the Hero Arts background stamp, Time to Stamp.

Quick additions, like small or large chipboard clocks, can make it easy to embellish a project, too.

Sentiments about time are hard to pass up.  The new stamp set by Ali Edwards for Technique Tuesday with classic quotes in modern fonts and shapes quickly went on my wish list.

Looking for something even more unique?  For those of you with an electronic cutter, the Cutting Cafe offers a fun clock shaped card.  The download includes the shapes and digital stamps needed to make a fun card like the one shown here by Regina Easter…

The ambitious crafter with a penchant for home decor may even want to try their hand making their very own clock wall decoration.  Large scale clocks you find in home decorating magazines can be recreated more affordably using your own crafting skills and a clock kit.

Make some time today to create something fun, or plan your days ahead to fit some of these time themed projects into your schedule.  You may find that time quickly flies when you are crafting, but I think we can all agree it is time well spent!
Enjoy and Happy Crafting!

Featured Designer: Iwona Palamountain

Today on the Paper Crafter’s Library blog, we’re continuing our weekly featured artist spotlight whereby each week we spotlight a different artist/designer in the paper crafting & mixed media world and introduce you to their fabulous work.

Today we’re thrilled to welcome – Iwona Palamountain!  I’ve been a long time fan of Iwona’s – absolutely loving her style and designs.  She’s put together a fabulous post today on inspiration. I also encourage you to check out her CASE Study Challenge blog which I’ve found to be a fantastic way to stretch my own creativity!

Before we show you her fabulous projects, let’s get to know her a little bit more…

palamountainheadshotHello, my name is Iwona Palamountain, but I’m also known in the blogland by my nickname Chupa. I live near Melbourne, Australia but I’m a born & bred Pole. I’ve got a loving and supportive husband, a beautiful 3yo daughter and I’m expecting another girl in April!

I’ve been paper crafting actively since I got pregnant with my first girl and although my hobby keeps me busy, I never looked back since. I love experimenting with many styles, and enjoy the versatility that both stamps and patterned papers give me. I dabble mostly in card-making, with an occasional 3-D project or scrapbooking layout. I aim to continuously learn and evolve as a paper crafter, and bring my readers a constant reason to keep coming back for more 🙂

I’m thrilled to be the Featured Designer here in Paper Crafters Library, and I hope you’ll enjoy what I prepared for you today.

My blog: http://ipalamountain.blogspot.com/

My Pinterest: http://pinterest.com/chupa/

CASE Study challenge blog: http://casestudychallenge.blogspot.com/

Today I’d like to talk about inspiration – how you can find it anywhere and everywhere, and how it can give your next project a kick-start.

I’m sure many of you can account for at least a few moments of creative stupor. I’m talking about the times when we look down at our supplies, with the nagging feeling that there’s absolutely nothing you can think of doing with them. Some of us rely on their favourite blogs or craft magazines, in giving a shot of inspiration needed to get started, but the real fun begins when we learn to see it everywhere around us. Think magazines about decorating, commercials, store fronts, stationery,  clothing. There are patterns, colour combinations and much more that can stir our imagination and lead to great projects.

I often peruse Pinterest (surely we ALL heard of it, right??), and that’s where I find plenty of images – craft related or not – that help me find my lost mojo. I would like to show you how, on a few examples from my personal pin boards.

How ’bout this gorgeous, shabby chic bedding?

(source}

I love the monochromatic palette & the way the different patterns compliment each other. I used Glitz Design papers, Kaisercraft die cuts and more to mimic the look, on the card below. I’ve got stripes, toile, scallops, feminine touches… can you see how much can be transformed into a card design?

palamountainLive Your Dreams

palamountainLive Your Dreams close-up

One of my favourite past-times is looking at photos of beautiful interiors. It’s a shame I can’t recreate the look of every one of them, but I sure can transform some of the goodness into paper craft! Let’s take a look at this lovely & calming living room, all in cream, sage & silver.

palamountaininspiration for Seed Packet

{source}

Once again I took the colours and patterns from the photo, plus I let the beautiful botanical images, determine the theme of my card. An addition of fabrics channels the coziness, and a touch of embossing links to the textures found in the room. Also, notice the pearls and how they stand for the metal elements – picture frames and coffee table.

palamountainSeed Packet

palamountainSeed Packet close-up

Finally, let’s think fashion. I dare say it’s one of the most ‘readable’ inspiration, since the designs found on the fabrics are easily found in the patterned paper assortment, or easy enough to recreate with stamps. I picked this stunning wedding dress, for the lush colour & texture of the damask, and let it guide me in creating the card below.

palamountaininspiration for Mr and Mrs

{source}

I die cut the damasks from glitter cardstock, which gives them required texture & substance, as well as the lush look appropriate for the occasion. I used a negative die-cutting technique, to give the card more depth. I chose to stamp & emboss the sentiment on vellum, which in turn is a nod towards the transparency of the tulle.

palamountainmrandmrs

So, what do you say?? It’s more fun than you might have thought! I hope I encouraged you to look around you, next time mojo fails you 🙂

About May Arts

May Arts Ribbon was founded in the early 1980’s in Riverside, Connecticut. The original products were high-end silk flowers imported from Taiwan, which were decorated using quality ribbons. The decorative ribbons proved so popular among customers that the business gradually evolved into a dedicated ribbon wholesaler.

As a family-owned and operated business, May Arts began a long-standing tradition of quality, affordability and exceptional customer service. We are dedicated to carrying on this same tradition by offering high quality products at competitive prices. Our friendly, knowledgeable staff is always happy to answer your questions or to assist you in placing your order.

May Arts carries a wide selection of quality ribbons to choose from; such as grosgrain, silk, satin, burlap and a variety of prints and patterns. All inventory is held in stock, so we can ship orders out right away—typically the same day.

Where to Buy May Arts Ribbons

The May Arts website is their wholesale site for online and brink and mortar retailers. We’ve linked to it so that you can easily view their entire product line in one place. There are numerous places where you can purchase May Arts Ribbons including many local scrapbook stores as well as online stores. Two of the online stores that carry the biggest selections that we are aware of include Amazon, who carry the complete May Arts Ribbon Line (plus you can qualify for free shipping). Click on the link we provided and it will take you to our May Arts Ribbon Search Results. To find a particular ribbon, go to the May Arts website, find the name of the ribbon and color and then enter that into your Amazon search results. Please note that through Amazon you’re buying by the roll. Most other online and local scrapbook stores sell May Arts Ribbon by the yard. One of the online stores that carries a great selection is Stamp Simply Ribbon Store.

Special May Arts Guest Designer

Today we a special project for you created by May Arts Guest Designer Jennifer Cowles.  You can see Jennifer’s fabulous project below, but first, here is a little more about Jennifer:

306jennifercowlesnew_head_shot-_bwMy name is Jenifer Cowles and I live in a small town in Idaho.

I work in the IT Department by day and Scrap and Sew after the kiddos go to sleep by night.  I have 3 cutie pies ages 13-7 who give me tons to scrap about.

I have been doing some sort of crafting my entire life and my day just doesn’t feel complete without making something.  I love a challenge and can make just about anything. I love ribbon and really can’t make something that doesn’t have at least one piece of ribbon on it some place.

May Arts Creative Project

306Jenifer_Cowles_MayArts_Notes
For my project I took a plain 9×6 spiral notebook and gave it a beautiful new cover in just a few spare moments.  On the bottom corner of my patterned paper I did a little silk ribbon embroidered rose with some french knot flowers clustered on the sides.

306Jenifer_Cowles_MayArts_Notes Closeup
The May Arts leaf ribbon is perfect to wind around and through some of the flower clusters.  Using the May Arts bakers twine I quickly embroidered “Notes” along the bottom, and woven through a doily towards the top to tie everything together.  After all the fun details were applied I adheared it to the notebook along with a cute polka-dot ribbon along the spiral to tie it all together.  It immediately went from bleh to WOW, in no time at all.

Free Project of the Week – Reach for the Sky Featuring Lawn Fawn Stamps

Every week on the Paper Crafter’s Library blog we feature a different company/manufacturer and introduce you to one of their fantastic collections or product lines. This week we’re featuring Lawn Fawn, so we decided to create this week’s Free Project of the Week using their stamps. Today’s card is this “Reach for the Sky” card which uses Lawn Fawn’s Sunny Skies stamp. I colored in the image using Copic Markers.  The nice thing about Lawn Fawn stamps is that if you are not “into” coloring, then you could very easily paper-piece with their stamps – which involves stamping onto patterned paper in black ink and then cut out the images.

Featured Artist: Andrea Ewen

Today on the Paper Crafter’s Library blog, we’re continuing our all new weekly featured artist whereby each week we spotlight a different artist/designer in the paper crafting & mixed media world and introducing you to their fabulous work.

Today we’re thrilled to welcome – Andrea Ewen!

Before we show you her fabulous project, let’s get to know her a little bit more…

AndreaEwenProfilePicHello crafty friends! My name is Andrea Ewen and I’ve been married to my high school sweet heart for almost 18 years (together for 27!). We have two children together, a 15 year old son and a 13 year old daughter. I live in New Jersey near the beautiful shore and work full time in a small pharmacy that is 2 blocks from the ocean. Crafting has always been a passion of mine…in high school I funded my extra curricular activities by sewing hair ‘scrunchies’ (remember those?) and making Christmas wreaths out of pinecones. One fateful day in 2002 I went to a Stampin’ Up! party and about blew my life savings on paper crafting supplies. I was so hooked! I have to say though, card making initially looked a lot easier than it was…for me. I made many ‘interesting’ cards in the following years but seemed to have found my stride 8 years later when I started my blog, EwenStyle. Maybe starting my blog gave me more confidence, or maybe more accountability, not sure…but either way I have learned immense lessons from this experience. For example, I’ve learned that there are blue-ish browns and red-ish browns. I’ve learned that more is not always better. I’ve learned that I REALLY love flowers and anything girly. And most importantly, I’ve learned that I still really have a lot to learn! I try to concentrate on absorbing as much as I can and experimenting as much as possible. I adore “paper manipulating” whether it be in the form of die cuts, border punches or flower making. I love to use lots of vintage and feminine items like ribbons, lace, pearls and flowers. My style has been evolving over the years, but I’ve seemed to have settled into the comfy chair of Vintage/Shabby Chic/Antique designs. I currently design for Verve Stamps, Zva Creative, Maja Design Vintage Papers, Paper Sweeties Stamps and 3 challenge blogs…the Ribbon Carousel, CASE Study and Vintage Card Cafe challenge.
Thanks so much for letting me ramble a bit…now for what I’m sure you’ve come to see…artwork!

andreaewenPCLSbVwm

Card Project Description:

I made this card with the above mentioned girly elements. I started off by cutting a 4″ X 5 1/4″ piece of cream card stock and scoring at 1/8″ and 1/4″ around the perimeter. Next I added a panel of patterned paper and sponged the perimeter with Walnut Stain distress ink. I have a method of ‘flower stacking’ on my cards…first the crocheted ribbon is adhered. I then start off with the largest flower (the white one) and fill in around it. After white came the homemade newsprint flower, followed by the smaller velvet hydrangea petals. The leaves get tucked under {strategically} as do the pearl and tulle accents. I like to add different types of textures so in addition to the round and square flowers, I’ve added a small hemp bow and Zva Creative crystal flourishes…all tucked in at the end.

abdreaewebPCLbCuC

The sentiment is stamped on Verve’s ‘Flag-It’ die and attached with a Tim Holtz Memo pin. The whole card is adhered to a 4 1/4″ X 5 1/2″ base of Early Espresso card stock.

 andreaewenPCLbCuA

andreaewenPCLbCu

Additional Instruction:

Here are some photos of the newsprint flower making method:

andreaewenNewsPrint1

I started off with a {very} old book (so sorry, Lord Tennyson!). I ripped out 8 pages and laid them over top of 3 different size Posy dies. After running that through my Big Kick, I carefully removed them from the die, but left the pages stuck together. At this point I want to curl up the ‘petals’ so that the whole flower will have dimension.

andreaEwenNewsprint2

I take a paper piercer and place the tip right in the middle of each petal, parallel to them. I then {carefully!} pull up the edges around the needle and crimp. I did this for all three sizes. I then pull apart the pages and start stacking.

andreaewenNewsPrint3

Two large staggered, 2 medium staggered and two small staggered, layered but NOT glued.

abdreaewebNewsPrint5

Pierce a hole through the middle of the stack and add pearl brad. Lastly add a bit of Platinum Stickles to the tips and fluff.  Liquid Pearls also produce a nice look.

gary plus kelly psKelly Marie’s love for crafting started at a very young age, making greeting cards using crayons and notebook paper. She recently found a card she made for her grandfather at the age of eight that she labeled with “Kelly Cards Inc.” on the back. A future in crafting was definitely meant to be! After double majoring in biochemistry and music at UCSD, Kelly decided to follow her dreams and created Lawn Fawn. She owns and operates the company, along with her husband, Mike, and friend, Erica. Kelly Marie is inspired by fun and bright design and interacting with crafters all around the world. Her cards and layouts have been published in leading craft magazines, including the cover of Paper Crafts.

My name is Chari {pronounced like Charlotte, for those of you wondering}  and I live in the beautiful mountains of Asheville, North Carolina with my husband Matt and our little dachshund Penny.  Graduating from NCSU School of Design, I work as an Architect during the day, but still need a creative outlet away from work.  I have been crafting and creating in some form all my life and developed a love for stamps at a very young age.   I like bright and fun design and enjoy sharing them with others.  i continue to learn and grow and be inspired by the amazing paper crafting community.  Besides crafting & architecture I also enjoy art, photography, movies with my hubby, exploring the mountains, spending time  with family and friends and traveling when I can.  I am super excited to join the Lawn Fawn team.  I just adore my Lawn Fawn stamps and discovering them is what renewed my passion for stamping after a long break from paper crafting.  Lawn Fawn stamps are fun and have a style all their own, a style that fits me perfectly.  🙂
