Trendy Tuesday – Rock On

Trendy Tuesday – Rock On
by Katherine Elliot

Projects that bring a bit of pop culture to the paper craft world are perfect for our trend posts here at the Paper Crafter”s Library.  I”m super excited to present today”s rock n” roll theme. There are a lot of great projects to share today.  Feel the beat of the rockin” examples from many talented artists and enjoy checking out the products available with this fun theme.

You Rock by Jen Shults

Whether you are a fan of this type of music or not, a rock n” roll theme or sentiment coordinates well with modern designs like the card above from Jen Shults.  The shapes and images are great to use for the young or young at heart.    Taylor VanBruggen” s card below uses the same stamp set from her company”s brand.  Taylor”s card pumps up the volume a little more with chic felt embellishments and an unmistakable rock star vibe.   Both artists used the You”re My Hero stamp set from Taylored Expressions on their card projects.

Next up are some great examples showing off images available from My Favorite Things.  MFT”s various rock theme steel rule die shapes, including guitar, flames and stars are showcased in the next projects shared today.

Karli”s elaborately layered card above and Aly”s teen-theme inspired scrapbook page below shows off most of the shapes available in the Accent It steel rule dies from MFT.

More stamp sets that coordinate with die shapes bring a lot of possibilities to projects.  My Favorite Things” stamp set. Rock On, may be just what a music fan is looking for…

Other companies like Papertrey Ink and Making Memories give you even more rock n” roll stamping options to consider…

You can find patterned paper and stickers with a rock n” roll vibe, too, to help you finish those teen-theme scrapbook pages and projects.

Artistically inspired, modern ink splatters combined with a rock theme can really make an impression.  Jeanne Streiff”s colorful card below is another inspiring rock theme project.  Jeanne”s card shows off yet another rock star stamp option from the company, Impression Obsession.

Card by Jeanne Streiff, featuring Rock Silhoutte stamp from Impression Obsession, image source Inky Paws

Michele Reynolds” next project makes me feel very sentimental about my neglected vinyl record collection (are you too young to know anything about vinyl records?  just Google-it!).   Michele”s card below uses a rock theme sentiment from Stampin” Up”s set, Bombs Away Birthday.  The stamp set is not totally rock n” roll, but this sentiment from the set and the fantastic faux record shapes make this an instant classic rock favorite.

Prefer to keep things simple?  A simple sentiment, like “You Rock,” is a popular phrase you may find in several stamp sets, like the set below from Technique Tuesday.

You don”t have to be a rock fan, rock star, or teenager to appreciate the simplicity of Julie Ebersole”s flattering card using the sentiment from this set.  The added bling of gold sequins and glitter add even more rock star glam to her project, too.

Summer is here and so is the heat, so why not stay inside, turn up the music and craft on!  Keep it rockin” everyone!

Free Project of the Week: Make a Wish – 06 21 2013

Welcome to this week’s Free Project of the Week.

Today’s project is this Make A Wish card, which features a paper pieced ice cream cone as the focal point.  Paper piecing is a great way to add color to an outline image stamp when you don’t want to color it in using inks.  You can watch a video on how this card was made and download a pdf handout below.

Featured Artist/Designer: Lisa Addesa

Today on the Paper Crafter’s Library blog, we’re continuing our weekly featured artist spotlight whereby each week we spotlight a different artist/designer in the paper crafting & mixed media world and introduce you to their fabulous work.

Today we’re thrilled to welcome – Lisa Addesa

Before we show you Lisa’s fabulous projects, let’s get to know her a little bit more…

620lisaaddessabiopicHi…my name is Lisa Addesa!  I live in Chesapeake, Virginia, a city near Virginia Beach.  I began stamping a long time ago, when stamps and ink were pretty much all there were to stamping.  During the raising of my three children, I gave up stamping and gave all my stamps and inks away!  Four years ago, my then 18yr old daughter and her friend went to a Stampin Up party.  She brought home three cards she had made, and when I saw them, I was hooked, again…and became even MORE passionate than the first time!!  I joined the online stamping community, Splitcoaststampers , and became involved in their  weekly challenges, growing my own little gallery of cards and finding my style.

In 2011, I discovered “blogs” and decided to start one of my own!!  My style of card making is clean and simple as I love clean, simple “looking” design, even though it may not be that simple to create!  I also LOVE bold colors and love using craft dies!!  Dies can add a very cool and fun design element to card making!  Comined with stamps, dies have made card making SO MUCH FUN for me!! I am honored to have had some of my cards published  in Papercrafts Magazine as well as currently being a member of the 2013 Simon Says Stamp Artist Group!!  I am also honored to have been asked to be featured on the  Crafter’s Library this week…thanks so much for the opportunity to share my passion with you!! I have decided to make 2 cards showing you clean and simple design, bold colors and the use of one die two ways (using the remnant of the 1st card for the 2nd card) combined with stamps…all of my favorite things…

Featured Projects

Instructions and Supplies used:

Card 1: I cut strips of colored paper and adhere them to some paper(I use lightweight white paper).  I then die cut the “Happy” from the panel of striped papers, and adhere the word to layers of light chipboard.   versamarked the Birthday Words stamp and placed the white panel on the inked stamp, then clear emboss.  Lastly, I popped up the panel on card and add “Happy” die cut.

Sizzix Phrases: Happy die Impression Obsession Cover-a–Card Birthday Words Scrap colored papers Papertrey Ink white paper Versamark Clear Embossing powder Pop up dots Big Shot Die Cutting Machine

Card 2:

lisaaddessacard2

Using the cut out of the 1st card, cut it into rectangle and stamped the “birthday” underneath the “Happy” .  Pop up the panel on black paper and then adhered the whole panel on white card. Two cards with 2 very different looks, yet using the same die and even the same striped paper…fun, right?!

Sizzix Phrases:

Thanks again for having me…hope you have a wonderful week!!

We hope you have enjoyed today’s projects courtesy of Lisa Addesa. Also, be sure to stop by Lisa’s blog to see even more of her beautiful work (and let her know we sent you).

Free Project of the Week: Papillon Miss You Card – 06 14 2013

Welcome to this week’s Free Project of the Week.

Today’s card is an easily reproducible design that doesn’t require a lot of materials – you can pretty much use any image in place of the butterfly, and swap out the sentiment for whatever is relevant to the occasion you are creating for.  You can watch a video on how this card was made and download a pdf handout below.

Featured Artist/Designer: Debby Hughes

Today on the Paper Crafter’s Library blog, we’re continuing our weekly featured artist spotlight whereby each week we spotlight a different artist/designer in the paper crafting & mixed media world and introduce you to their fabulous work.

Today we’re thrilled to welcome – Debby Hughes

Before we show you Debby’s fabulous projects, let’s get to know her a little bit more…

DebbyHughes2013closeskyHi, I’m Debby Hughes, living in Scotland with my husband, I’m a stay at home Mum to our three children. I have a science background but have always been making something in my spare time. My crafty pursuits became a more prominent part of my life after my children were born and I found that creating was a great antidote to running around after little ones all day. Now my children are older and at school my main role seems to be the family taxi service!

I started blogging in 2010 so that I could join in with the card challenges I enjoyed. You can find my blog here (http://limedoodledesign.com). Since those first days, when I wondered if anyone would pop by my blog, it has been a wonderful creative journey involving Challenge Blogs, Splitcoaststampers Dirty Dozen, Company Design Teams, Online Classes and the thrill of seeing my cards in print. Currently I am on the CASE Study Challenge team (http://casestudychallenge.blogspot.co.uk) and design for Clearly Besotted Stamps (http://www.clearlybesottedstamps.com), Lil’ Inker Designs (http://www.lilinkerdesigns.com) and Simon Says Stamp (http://www.simonsaysstamp.com).

Card Projects

I am delighted to be here at Paper Crafter’s Library today! I thought for my projects I’d look at using different heat embossing and colouring methods for my images. My first card uses gold embossing for this wonderful Hero Arts flower from their Pattern Hearts and Flowers set.

debbyhugheslimedoodlePCLthankingyou

After embossing I coloured the flowers with Copics before fussing cutting out and foam mounting onto a card base with the lower third covered with patterned paper and a sentiment strip added above. The sentiment is also heat embossed with white powder. A few gold sequins were the final touch.

Supplies:

Clear Stamps: CL596 Pattern Hearts & Flowers set by Hero Arts, sentiment from Tilted Banner Sayings set by Simon Says Stamp
Inks: Versamark by Tsukineko
Card: Neenah solar white, Taffy by Bazzill, Rock Candy by Bazzill
Paper: The Sweetest Thing Tangerine 6×6 pad by My Mind’s Eye
Sequins: Ebay
Copics: R02, R05, R08, G94, G99, BV00, BV08
Embossing Powder: Super Fine Detail Gold by Ranger

 DebbyhugheslimedoodlePCLhello

For my second card, I white heat embossed the flowers and leaves from Clearly Besotted Stamps ‘You Are’ set and then stamped the images again onto masking paper and created a negative mask. I placed this over the images and then used a foam applicator and Distress Inks to colour them. Once I removed the mask I used the matching dies to cut them out. I mounted the flowers with leaves tucked under onto a die cut note page, stamped with the matching journaling lines. The little journaling card was clipped to a card base decorated with subtle patterned papers. This time I added a twine tied button and a few enamel dots as a finishing touch.

Supplies:

Clear Stamps: flower and leaves from You Are set by Clearly Besotted Stamps, journaling lines from Notebook Doodles by Lil’ Inker Designs, hello sentiment from Handwritten Sentiments by Simon Says Stamp
Inks: Versafine Onxy Black and Versafine Smokey Gray and Versamark by Tsukineko, Mustard Seed, Spiced Marmalade, Barn Door, Bundled Sage, Forest Moss and Peeled Paint Distress Inks by Ranger
Card: Neenah Solar White, Butter Mints by Bazzill
Dies: You Are set by Clearly Besotted Stamps, notebook by Lil’ Inker Designs
Enamel Dots: The Sweetest Thing Tangerine by My Mind’s Eye
Embossing Powder: White by Hero Arts
Paper Clip: Idea-ology mini paper clips by Tim Holtz
Twine: Harvest collection by Hemptique
Button

I hope I’ve inspired you to get out your heat gun and try heat embossing. It is after all one of those wow techniques; when you see the embossing powder melt and become smooth it really is amazing! Thank you Paper Crafter’s Library for having me join you today 🙂

We hope you have enjoyed today’s projects courtesy of Debby Hughes. Also, be sure to stop by Debby’s blog to see even more of her beautiful work (and let her know we sent you).

About May Arts

May Arts Ribbon was founded in the early 1980’s in Riverside, Connecticut. The original products were high-end silk flowers imported from Taiwan, which were decorated using quality ribbons. The decorative ribbons proved so popular among customers that the business gradually evolved into a dedicated ribbon wholesaler.

As a family-owned and operated business, May Arts began a long-standing tradition of quality, affordability and exceptional customer service. We are dedicated to carrying on this same tradition by offering high quality products at competitive prices. Our friendly, knowledgeable staff is always happy to answer your questions or to assist you in placing your order.

May Arts carries a wide selection of quality ribbons to choose from; such as grosgrain, silk, satin, burlap and a variety of prints and patterns. All inventory is held in stock, so we can ship orders out right away—typically the same day.

Where to Buy May Arts Ribbons

The May Arts website is their wholesale site for online and brink and mortar retailers. We’ve linked to it so that you can easily view their entire product line in one place. There are numerous places where you can purchase May Arts Ribbons including many local scrapbook stores as well as online stores. Two of the online stores that carry the biggest selections that we are aware of include Amazon, who carry the complete May Arts Ribbon Line (plus you can qualify for free shipping). Click on the link we provided and it will take you to our May Arts Ribbon Search Results. To find a particular ribbon, go to the May Arts website, find the name of the ribbon and color and then enter that into your Amazon search results. Please note that through Amazon you’re buying by the roll. Most other online and local scrapbook stores sell May Arts Ribbon by the yard. Today we a special project for you created by May Arts Guest Designer Erin Thiem. You can see Erin’s fabulous projects below, but first, here is a little more about Erin:

May Arts Featured Project:
Card and Coordinating Gift Tag

I’m here with a fun project using May Arts ribbon and some of the new Hero Arts Stamp Your Story goodies.

612pic004

I was inspired by Shari’s video on the Hero Arts blog using their new daubers and large background stamp.
612pic001
I grabbed a trio of the daubers and added the inks to the stamp, sprayed with water before laying a piece of cardstock on top of the stamp. I used the tip of pressing a paper towel on top of the stamp to help absorb the extras and that worked great. I love the artsy feel of the background.
612pic002

Next up take 2 May Arts Sheer Chiffon flowers and use the daubers to color in the flowers. The jumbo May Arts leaves were the perfect size, so I cut individual leaves and added a cluster under the flowers.
612project2
To complete my card I stamped a PTI sentiment to the bottom and added the panel to a separate
piece of cardstock.
612pic003

I wanted to make a gift tag to go along with my card, so I started by creating a coordination button with an extra stamped sheet using the same technique above. To give the button a little something extra I added a layer of May Arts 2 ½ inch sheer ribbon over the stamped card stock and then added the whole button to the May Arts inked flower. To complete the look I die cut out a tag with another inked up card sheet and then used a piece of May Arts solid wrinkle ribbon around the center and tied up with May Arts woven velvet and silk. 612project

Supplies used in card:

May Arts jumbo leaves
Hero Arts Painted Canvas Background Stamp
Hero Arts daubers

Trendy Tuesday – All About Dad

Trendy Tuesday – All About Dad
by Katherine Elliot

Masculine theme cards abound this time of year as we approach father’s day.  I have friends that say they have a difficult time making “man cards.”   Fortunately it was my experience that dad was always pleased with anything hand made.  So even if you feel you struggle with a macho style, never fear making a card for dad or the father figure in your life.  Today I’ve pulled out some of my favorite images celebrating fathers and masculine themes.  Many of the projects highlight trends from previous Trendy Tuesday articles.  You can use today’s post to review some articles you may have missed, just look for the hyperlink words as you read along.

The chalkboard style is still a hit with many stampers and that style works great for a masculine theme card.  Check out Joan Erwin’s card with a sentiment that says it all.  Her card features a new stamp from Taylored Expressions that is perfect for the chalkboard style.  Gotta love that chevron touch as well, as those shapes are still very hot.

Clocks and time pieces are a trendy theme and the images can create a great background for that dependable man in your life.   Shani Thomas created a detailed, time-honored card using images from Inspired by Stamping.

Go ahead, dare to make dad cry with a sentimental silhouette style card like the one Christine Okken created using stamps from Flourishes.  A couple wood buttons also make great manly accents on her card.

Rustic charm and a fishing theme decorate this next card created by Makiko Jones featuring another Fathers Day stamp set from Flourishes, What a Catch.

More fish decorate this next card using a background stamp from Unity Stamp Company.  The straight forward layout incorporates some distressing, brads and twine, all great details to add to a masculine style card.

More tools, some cool dots, and a wrench charm tied to the string on this card by Chris Veneruso show details that would surely impress dad.

The Handyman stamp set from Paper Pretties includes many great man-themed images and sentiments.

Hard to forget the golf fanatic this time of year, too.  Dawn Easton’s card looks clean and simply “par-fect.” What a great card to include some banners that are still very popular, too.

The Boys Will Be Boys stamp set that Dawn Easton used is another set that includes a wide variety of images and sentiments.

The witty, yet slightly more formal father figure, may just love a chic, bright card like Mary Fish’s card below.  The little mustache and tie looks super sweet.

Lines and graphic shapes are great for any style masculine card.  Cathee Anderson created a mini-album that shows off several fresh shapes and colors from Stampin’ Up!  She used a fun tutorial from studionoeight for her project. The trendy arrows help focus your attention on the man of honor.

It’s a couch potato’s delight with this next stamp set from Papertrey Ink.  You don’t have to be a dad to appreciate this one… this has my brother written all over it…

Hope you had a chance to sit and relax while you read today’s post and revisited a few of our previous ones.  Enjoy creating for the man in your life.  Happy crafting, everyone!
