Blast from the Past: Altered Band-Aid Tin from the “A Touch of Romance” Valentine’s Class 2010

Isn’t this project adorable?  This little beauty was created in January of 2010 for the “A Touch of Romance” online class Soph and I ran through the Sunny Stampin’ Blog.  For this project Soph altered a little band-aid tin and then created some little “love notes” to go inside.  Since our “A Touch of Romance” classroom is no longer open, as a benefit to our Paper Crafter’s Library members, we have uploaded the video and instructions into the library – in fact we’ve been uploading all of our projects from that class, and will be uploading all the projects from all the online classes we ran in 2010 – there are some pretty cute ones!

Flashing back to 2012, today is our “Technique Thursday” day in Paper Crafter’s Library where we post our videos for our year-long technique Club called Club 52.  Although really, we probably should have called it Club 104 since each week we typically release two techniques.  We’re now on week 18, having started back in September. One of the unique things about Club 52 is that we don’t just throw techniques at you willy nilly,  instead we work in a “series” based on one medium – that way you really learn how to make the most of each medium that you own.  So far, we’ve explored dye ink pads, dye ink refills and shimmer paints.  This week we’re moving on to embossing, with Week 18 (this week), exploring a few of the basic embossing techniques. In the top tag Tracy shows you basic embossing with VersaMark and clear embossing embossing powder (as well as Iridescent Ice embossing powder), and in the bottom tag Tracy shows you how you can emboss any color of dye-based ink you own.

If you’re interested in checking out what we’ve covered so far, you can look at our Club 52 page.  If you’re a techique junkie and would like to learn new techniques (as many of them are ones we have created), or revisit old ones – you can still sign up from this page – you’ll be able to access all 18 weeks we’ve done so far, plus the remaining weeks, and your access to the classroom will last for 15 months.

We’ll be back tomorrow with our first Freebie Friday for 2012!

Please Help Me Welcome The New Paper Crafter’s Library Design Team!

Whew!  What a difficult decision it was to make our selections for our first ever Paper Crafter’s Library Design Team.  First off, I want to thank each and everyone of you that took the time to apply for this go-round, and I especially want to thank you for being so supportive of each other.  As we checked out each of our design team submissions I noticed that many of you had commented on each other’s posts.  It really warmed my heart, and is such a prime example of how wonderful the paper crafting community is.

I really wish that we were able to select each and every one of you, but unfortunately we had to narrow it down to four.  For those for that were invited to join the Design Team I would like to extend a very warm welcome – we – the current Paper Crafter’s Library team are very excited to have you on board.

There were many factors that we considered when selecting our team – of course we were looking for different design styles, variety in project types & blogs that were regularly updated, but one of the heaviest factors we took into consideration – given that Paper Crafter’s Library is a video library, was each candidate’s experience with video.

For those that were not selected, many of whom were courageous enough to attempt videos just for this design team call – I want to really applaud you for stepping out and trying something new.  Video is a wonderful way to gain experience teaching and to increase exposure to your blog and to your work.  I would encourage each of you that were not selected this time around, to continue to create your video tutorials – because in 3 months time, we will have another design team call.

In the meantime, in no particular order, please help me welcome…..

Kristin Wilson – Lil Sweet Pea’s Place

Michelle Weksler – Figments of My Imagination

Keren Baker – Creative Journey of an Everyday Crafter

Ezlie Perez – Made by EJP

In the upcoming days I’ll be introducing each one of our new Design Team Members.

Be My Valentine Card

After months of creating Christmas projects, it’s very refreshing to be able to switch themes….although in a month, I’m sure I’ll be saying the same thing about red and pink LOL.

Today’s card features a die cut window which I created using the Presto Punch heart templates.  One of the things I love about the Spellbinder’s Presto Punch templates is that not only can I use them in the Presto Punch itself, but, as in the case of this card, you can use them as actual dies a well.

To create my window, I layered my patterned paper from the My Mind’s Eye Love Me collection onto my Blushing Bride CS and then onto my red cardstock and then die cut my heart shaped window through all three layers at once…sweet!

I then used the Blushing Bride heart and stuck it to the inside of my card with the greeting on it – so that when you open up the card front, you see the bling-ed up heart inside. A fun and easy way to send a Valentine’s message!

Supplies:

Stamps: Delightful Dozen (Stampin’ Up!)
Ink: Tuxedo Black Memento ink (Tsukineko)
Paper: Blushing Bride CS (Stampin’ Up!); Pomegranate CS, Ivory Smooth CS (Bazzill); Love Me Collection (My Mind’s Eye)
Accessories: Cherry Cobbler Seam Binding ribbon, bone folder (Stampin’ Up!); double sided adhesive (thermo-web); Hearts Presto Punch Templates, Grand Calibur (Spellbinders); Scotch removable tape (Scotch); red rhinestones (My Mind’s Eye)

We have the video tutorial and pdf handout available to Paper Crafter’s Library members here (remember you have to be logged in to access this page).  Not a member?  For more information click HERE.

Don’t forget, we’ll be announcing our Paper Crafter’s Library design team members here on the blog tomorrow!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year…+ Some Projects

Hi everyone – all of us at Paper Crafter’s Library hope you had a wonderful Christmas with your family and friends!  I apologize for the longer than usual silence.  Our Christmas “vacation” started on Friday at noon when we hit the road to visit our family in Ottawa. Every second year we celebrate Christmas in Ottawa at my parent’s place. It’s always quite the production when we drive anywhere because there are too many of us to fit in one car LOL!  There were four adults in all: Todd and I, Irene (our nanny), and Papa (my 91 year old grandpa), our 5 children and of course our little dog Ginger.   On our way, we stopped in Trenton to meet up with my sister (Soph) and her family. So when we hit the road again we were a three vehicle “caravan”.

The drive from Cambridge to Ottawa is never fun – it’s always long – 6-8 hours depending on the weather and traffic (and traffic through Toronto was pretty slow), and of course depending on how many stops we need for the kids.  We arrived at about 8:30 pm – just in time for our traditional dinner of San Marino’s pizza.  San Marino’s is a little independent pizza place that is just up the road from my parent’s house, and they have the most amazing pizza.  Whenever we visit my parents it’s always traditional for to have pizza the night we arrive – so they didn’t disappoint LOL!  After that it took a long time to unpack, get the kids settled and then eventually fall into bed exhausted.

Christmas Eve during the day we spent some time shopping for last minute gifts – despite my best intentions, things were so hectic leading up to Christmas that I didn’t manage to quite finish everything.  Then of course there was hours upon hours of wrapping and then patiently (or not so patiently) waiting for the kids to fall asleep. Despite all their excitement about the imminent arrival of Santa, it still takes them forever to fall asleep.

Christmas morning we got a little “present” from Sammy (our youngest) – he slept in until 9:30 am!  Pretty much every day of the year he’s up between 5:45 am and 6:15 am – so after getting to bed after midnight the night before it was a welcome treat.  We had tied the double-doors to the family room shut so there was no way the kids to bust into the room and get to the presents before the adults got there LOL.  Thankfully our older kids are pretty patient on Christmas morning, so Todd and I took full advantage of our “sleep in”.  With the number of people in the house – 8 adults and 8 children in all – and because we open our gifts one at a time – it took quite a long time to finish. The rest of the day was spent preparing for, enjoying and cleaning up after Christmas Dinner.  It was around that time though, that things started to go kind of downhill.

My dad had been feeling quite out of sorts most of Christmas Day, with abdominal discomfort, as well as fever and chills. On Monday he wasn’t feeling much better and by the afternoon was looking distinctly yellow – he was jaundiced. My step-mom took him right to the hospital, and after hours of tests and waiting, it turned out that he has viral hepatitis! Thankfully, it’s one that they feel will resolve itself, and as the week has progressed, he has been feeling better and looking less yellow.  Of course on Monday morning, my husband Todd woke up with a terribly sore throat amongst other things – he was hit by a terribly bad cold which kept him in bed for almost 2 1/2 days. The same day our youngest started running a fever and had a terrible cough.  Since then I’ve gotten sick, my step-mom has gotten sick and so have a few more of the children.

So needless to say it’s been a challenging week, and the reason that you haven’t heard from us.  So today, in addition to my little update, I have a few more things to share with you.  First off, if you are a Paper Crafter’s Library member, despite the silence here on the blog, video tutorials have been posted for members on an almost daily basis (Monday to Friday). Of course now that Christmas is over, we’ve been moving on to Valentine’s projects.  Here are a couple of the ones we’ve shared this past week

The first one is this “U Rock” Card.  The scalloped frame was created using my Grand Calibur and Spellbinders Nestabilities.  The letter “U” is a chipboard letter which I covered in pigment ink, and then embossed using a fine glitter.

The second card is this “Smitten” card.  I created this card using some papers from my My Mind’s Eye Love Me Collection.  The decorative border was die cut with a Tim Holtz Sizzix Edgeability die.

Of course that wasn’t all we posted for Paper Crafter’s Library members – we had our Club 52 projects – which we are now focusing on Shimmer Paints and various ways to use them, we’ve been uploading the projects from our 2010 online Valentine’s class and had this cute truffle box which Soph designed – we put some yummy Chocolate Truffles inside and gave them to my dad as part of his Christmas gift.

Okay, so that’s what we’ve been doing on a creative front.  We’re heading back to Cambridge on Monday, so I won’t be posting here again until Tuesday.  If you haven’t already looked, you can check out the winners for our last Freebie Friday and Makeover Monday in the posts below.

My New Years Resolution is to craft more with my friends and to learn new techniques! Which is why I am hoping you will be having Club 52 again or maybe I can join anytime. Of course I always include my health and that of my family but that is not really a resolution as a lifestyle to maintain.

I adore this project and so wish I had time to order these for Christmas Gifts – but maybe next year or for RAK gifts for this year!

Fantastic ideas and I am loving your site!

Merry Christmas and I hope you enjoy time with your family and friends this season

Girl on Crescent Moon, Dreamland Crafts Card

Ok, so today’s card uses this absolutely adorable image by Dreamland Crafts .  This little Anime style girl would be perfect for any winter occassion, be it Christmas or winter birthday’s.    The super fun thing about this card, is all the layers which you will find in the image.  I wanted to demonstrate the more intricate form of paper tole, and decided that this image would be perfect for that.  The other fun elements of this card include the beautiful Tattered Pinecone Sizzix die which I used for the pine branches, and the beautiful Spellbinder dies which I used for both the mats on the image, and the small mat on one of the layers.  All in all, I love how this whole card turned out, and hope you do to!

Cricut Craft Room: Fish Bowl Box and Peppermint Candy Box

Fish Bowl Box, with Birthday Greeting hidden inside.  Eat candy, see message.

Peppermint candy box, fill it with white candy, or fill it with red, either way, it is the perfect little gift for the holidays.

Well today’s projects, come to you compliments of the Cricut Craft Room!  This free software, offered by Provocraft, is a wonderful tool which allows you to create as you would on a Gypsy.  Ok, so here is the low-down.  The idea is that when you download and open the Craft Room, you have the ability to see every cartridge for every machine, which Cricut has available.  Not only can you see it with all the layers, but you can also play with it.  Now this is great if you are not sure how versatile a cartridge is!  On top of this, they offer exclusive digital cartridges which are for purchase online, and many of their existing cartridges are also available for digital purchase.  The only thing which you will need to do, is ensure that you have a Cricut account.  Now once you have looked at the different cartridges, and played around a bit, you will realize how great this studio is!  You can alter and remove parts of a design, or create new ones using existing shapes.  The only thing which you must be aware of, is that you will need the cartridges used in order to cut out your project (along with a Cricut Digital Machine).  The cartridges must be either physical (actual cartridge), or Digital.  And if that wasn’t enough, Cricut Craft Room has an exclusive free digital cartridge which has some images, as well as a font.

Ok, so there are a few quirks about the Craft Room, which I should mention.  For starters, you can only use it with an internet connection.  This means that should your internet go down…… there will be no playing.  On top of that (due to the internet issue), you will not have your digital cartridges downloaded on to your computer, but rather will have access to them while you are in the Craft Room.  I have to admit that this was not the most pleasing way of running it, but as long as you have a good computer, and a good connnection, you should be fine!

So for today’s projects, I used the Cricut Craft Room   for designing.  I made sure that each project would require only one cartridge.  The Fish Bowl uses the Create a Critter cartridge, and the Candy Box uses the Simply Charmed cartridge. I thought it would be fun, to alter them a bit to create some shaped treat boxes/flat cards.  For Paper Crafter Library members, you will have the ease of downloading my Craft Room files, so that all you have to do is load and cut!

Supplies:

  • Cartridges:  Simply Charmed, Create a Critter
  • Paper:  Pool Party, Lucky Limeade, Tangering Tango (retired), Cajun Craze, Basic Black, Whisper White, Appricot Appeal (retired), Creamy Caramel (retired), Island Indigo, Real Red DP  Stampin’Up!
  • Ink:  Shabby Shutter, Broken China, Vintage Photo, Spiced Marmalade, Rusty Hinge, Chipped Sapphire, Aged Mahogany Distress Ink
  • Other:  strong glue, glue dots, Tombow multi-purpose adhesive, Sakura Stardust pen, sponges, Pool Party 3/8″ ruffled ribbon, Cricut Expression, candy

Makeover Monday Challenge #8: Inspired by Debbie Olson….& A Winner

* Please note that this will be our last Makeover Monday for 2011 – our Makeover Monday challenge will resume on Monday, January 9th.

Welcome to our Make Over Monday Challenge – a weekly challenge brought to you by the Paper Crafter’s Library and Sunny Stampin’ Studios.  The purpose of Makeover Monday is to help you learn how to take the ideas and inspiration you find on the internet, and make it your own. This challenge is strictly a “work from your stash” challenge.

Over the last 7 years of teaching in the paper crafting industry, I’ve noticed that many of my students feel like they have to run out and buy the exact same products I used, rather than looking to their own stash to see if they having something that might work instead.

Now  I’ll be the first to admit, shopping for paper crafting supplies is fun, and I certainly do my share of it, but why spend your money on a product that may be similar to what you already have?………………and that’s where the concept for Makeover Monday was born.

Every Monday I take a project I found on the internet, and show you my process for recreating it and making it my own, using supplies from my own stash.

This week’s Makeover Monday inspiration piece shown below comes from Debbie Olson – a super talented paper crafter that I have been following for a loooong time!  If you’ve never seen her work you should definitely check out her blog Thinking Inking – she’s particularly amazing at coloring with Copic markers.  I don’t have a direct link to the card shown below as I found it off of Nichole Heady’s blog months ago (Debbie is a design team member for Papertrey Ink).

You can watch the video below on how I made my card:

Here are the details on how you can participate in the Makeover Monday Challenge:
