Trend Watch – Kitty Break

During a busy week, I sometimes need a break.

Well, maybe “need” is too strong of a word.  I’d really like a break or I desperately require a distraction.  So, I find myself on YouTube or Facebook looking at funny videos or pictures of animals being cute, silly, sly, and grumpy.  It usually does the trick.

Well, what actually happens is that I look up and discover that so much time has gone by since I starting looking at kitties that I kind of have to get back to the task at hand.  So this week I decided to make this post about a fun distraction: the world of the kitty.

They are so cute and there are a lot of new stamp sets and dies that can help inspire some of your paper crafting projects.

I just love the creativity of this first card.  The cat’s faces are just so expressive and I love how Michelle stacks the cat faces to create a scene that looks like they have all been up to some mischief.

Another super cute and fun card is this little gem from Lydia.  Her little white kitty is such a little cutie and the sentiment she uses while the kitty is digging through his litter box is just priceless.

In addition to being funny, kitties still bring you a smile when they are being grumpy.  Danielle’s tag is just adorable.  Her little kitty has a serious attitude.

Alice’s grumpy cat is so awesome it looks like picture.  She has serious coloring skills.  I just love this card.

Not only did this next talented lady create a super cool comic book inspired card, she also created the entire stamp set as a tribute to her two adopted kitties!  Very inspiring.

How much is that kitty in the window?  How could you pick between all of this cuteness?  I just love this look and the black and white shadowing.

This next group of cards I chose because they were such a cute selection of kitties being kitties.  The look on this little one’s face as he looks at the mouse… so adorable.

If you have ever had a cat, you may have experienced what Taheerah created so beautifully in her card.  What looked like a game to them ripped your wallpaper/curtains/clothes/computer wires to shreds.  But they are so cute though!

I love the scene of the kitties playing in the sun, trying to catch everything that floats by, kites and sunbeams alike.

Emily’s card is so sweet.  It is so clever how she used frames to sit her kitties in. And a sentiment in each of the frames is so pretty.

Just to up the cuteness factor, get a load of this sweet kitty with the heart balloons tied to her tail.

It is possible to love your kitties too much?  Not for us, but maybe for the kitties.  Sharon captured the pure joy of the little girl and the patience of the kitty getting loved up.

Cats and kitties are a wonderful little mental break in real life and in paper crafts.  There are so many cute options, I hope you enjoyed looking at their sweet whiskered faces and are now prepared to get back to your list of things to do.  But before you do, check out some of the products I found for even more inspiration.

So go ahead…make something pretty.

PCL is excited to Welcome New Designer/Educators

Happy Good Friday to those of you that celebrate Easter!  I wanted to take a minute to introduce you to three new designers we’ve added to the PCL team in the last couple of months.

Tracy Gruber

Tracy’s work first started appearing in the Paper Crafter’s Library member area in February.

TracyMaePolaroidHere is a little bit about Tracy:

I’m Tracy and I am a 24 year old college student. I graduated in May of 2012 with a Psychology degree and now I’m back in school going for a Graphic Design degree.

I have been creating for as long as I can remember, doing projects with beads, paper, string, glue, you name it! Now, I love to make cards using fun techniques and stamps!

You can follow Tracy on her blogYou Tube, InstagramFacebookPinterest & Twitter.

Therese Calvird

Therese’s work first started appearing in the Paper Crafter’s Library member area in March.

ThereseCalvirdPolaroid-200WHi it’s Therese and I’m so excited to be a part of the Papercrafter’s Library.  I live in Australia with my husband and two adorable cats and have been making cards for 10 years.

I like to try many different styles but my ‘go to’ style I would have to say is clean and simple, I also really enjoy the challenge of trying out new techniques.

I started my Youtube channel 3 years ago and love to film my cards as I create.  That is why I am so happy to be one of the Designer / Educator’s so now I can share my passion with you and you can share the card making process with me and I hope that you will learn something along the way.

You can see more Therese’s work on her blogYouTube ChannelFacebook and Pinterest.

Yana Smakula

Yana’s work debuted in the Paper Crafter’s Library Member area today.

YanaSmakulaPolaroid-200W

My name is Yana Smakula, I’m 20-something years old and I’m from Ukraine. I’ve been married for a little bit over three years now, no kids but we do have two black cats and we can’t live without them!

I love to travel and meet new people, discover new cultures and just explore. So far together with my husband we’ve been to a few places in Europe, Africa, Asia and USA. Our next dream destination is Madagascar, I hear the nature there is simply breathtaking!

I enjoy scrapbooking and I mostly scrapbook about our travels (I often take long pauses from scrapbooking when I have no new travel photos to scrapbook).

My other passion is cardmaking – I enjoy trying new products and techniques, experimenting and creating in different styles. I’m very much into stamping and die cutting although I never really though I was until I took a closer look at my cards and noticed almost all of them use stamps and dies!

You can see more of Yana’s work on her blogYouTubeFacebookInstagram and Pinterest.

We’re absolutely thrilled to have these new designers on board!

You can expect to see their work regularly in the member area of Paper Crafter’s Library. If you are interested in more information on becoming a member click HERE.

If you enjoy filming video tutorials and are interested in being considered for a position as a Designer/Educator – please email us at customerservice@papercrafterslibrary.com.  Please include a link to your blog and YouTube channel in the email.

Bonus Tutorial from Cut@Home Design Team Member Polly Zastawnik and a Give Away! 04 03 2015

Cut At Home Designer – Polly Zastawnik

This week we have a bonus tutorial for you, brought to you by one of Cut At Home‘s designers Polly Zastawnik.

Before we show you Polly’s project, let’s get to know her a little bit more…

PollyZastawnikProfilePic-250W-04032015

Hi, Polly here, I am so honored to be a featured designer here at Paper Crafters Library and to be representing the Cut@Home design team.

I was born and raised in the Cleveland, Ohio area. I have a loving husband of 36 years, a wonderful son and daughter-in-law, and the apple of my eye, a granddaughter who will be two in May. We also have two fur babies, an Old English Sheepdog named Maggie and a Golden Retriever named Ella.

I work full time managing a copy/mail center by day and a craft studio by night! I have been an artist/crafter since I can remember. I always had a desire to cut, paste and design. I did well in art at school and have a two year Degree in Commercial Art.

I started paper crafting in 2001 when a friend’s daughter asked me to take her to a scrapbook store. After that it was all over, I was hooked. I am a gadget girl, which can tend to get me in trouble. When a new gadget comes along I have to have it! I try to use restraint but it usually doesn’t work very well. Somethings sit forever till I use them, but I usually always do eventually.
Just the other day I was making a tag that I wanted to use ribbon for, after I cut it and tied it onto my tag I noticed that the ribbon was wrinkled. Finally, an opportunity to use that Pebbles ribbon iron I just had to have. LOL, but I did finally use it!
Well anyway, on to my project.

Picture Frame Trinket Box

Today I made a picture frame trinket box.I got this cute little wooden box from a local store here called Pat Catans, but you could probably find something similar at any craft/hobby store. First I sanded any ruff spots on the box then I painted it, after it dried I gave it a second coat of paint. After it dried I cut the paper to fit the areas that I wanted to cover. I adhered the paper onto the box with the podge. After I adhered the paper I gave the whole box a coating of podge. The only thing that doesn’t have a coat of podge is the drawer, the paint I used for the drawer was a metallic paint so it really didn’t need the semi gloss finish of the podge.

PollyZastawnik1-550W-04032015

Next I created the flowers. I made them from a sheet of colored foil. I adhered the colored foil onto a sheet of cardstock using the podge. I got this great idea from Patti, another Cut@Home design team member. It works great, the podge really sticks to the foil. Then I cut the flowers from the Delightful Daisy die, shaped them, added the gems and adhered them to my box.

PollyZastawnik2-550W-04032015

Finally I added the sentiment and the card which I created using the Silhouette design software. PollyZastawnik-550W-04032014

Here’s my video instructions for this Picture Frame Trinket Box.

I am really happy with the finished results! I hope that you enjoyed my project and hope that you will stop by Cut@Home to check out our weekly blog posts and browse around to see all the great products that they carry. I would also love to have you join my own personal blog: www.pazasproductions.blogspot.com

Featured Artist/Designer: Amy Wanford 04 02 2015

Welcome to another Featured Artist/Designer Spotlight.

Today we’re thrilled to welcome Amy Wanford. Before we show you Amy’s project, let’s get to know her a little bit more…

AmyWanford-250W-0402015Hey! I’m Amy Gray – aka Aimes – based in Sheffield, England who loves tea, toast and papercrafting. You might know me as Amy Wanford, but I found myself a husband in January this year! I’ve always been creative, but discovered my love for stamping and cardmaking since starting my blog, Crafting Confessions, in 2008.

My blog and passion have led me to take on a new adventure, leaving my career in education to start a new career as  the Editor of the UK magazine, Simply Cards & Papercraft. I write about and admire papercrafting pretties by day, and by night I continue the day job by indulging in my hobby even more! I consider myself extremely lucky to have my hobby as my career. My world is literally surrounded by papercrafting!

My work has been published in many magazines both in the US and the UK. I’ve been on various Design Teams and I’m currently on the Clearly Besotted Design Team. I’ve been lucky enough to see some of my designs released as stamp sets and co-ordinating dies under the prestigious brand. My only wish is that I had a time machine to dedicate even more time to having fun designing and creating. 🙂

You can check out my work via my blog, Crafting Confessions, or if you fancy keeping up with my day-to-day work and day dreaming then check out my Pinterest boards and/or Instagram. I occasionally tweet too. 🙂

Friend

I decided that I wanted to sit and play with a combination of goodies to create this card for you today. So today’s card showcases just a few of my favourite things at the moment: Crate Paper, Studio Calico and Clearly Besotted pretties. I love how they work so well together. Oh, and I’ve also featured splashes of gold – I can’t resist gold at the moment. 🙂

AmyWanford-550W-04022015

Here are a few pointers about this card that might help you in making the most of your stash:

I customised my wood veneer shapes with acrylic paint. You can customise wood veneer shapes using a variety of mediums from your stash to co-ordinate them perfectly with your projects. Experiment and have fun!

The small heart is actually a negative shape from the aperture of a birdhouse die. I like to keep all my little scraps as you never know when they’ll make the perfect finishing touch to a project. 🙂

For my sparkly gold accents I used Cricut’s Gold Iron-on Glitter material. Don’t let a product restrict your creativity by only using it for its intended purpose. I found that this product works well with my dies and I love the sparkle it adds to my cards – no iron required!

Supplies

Papertrey Ink’s Vintage Cream cardstock
Crate Paper’s Be Mine 12×12″ paper from the Kiss Kiss Collection
Cricut Gold Iron-on Glitter material
Gold Polka-Dot Washi Tape
Studio Calico Wood Veneer Shapes
white acrylic paint
Tuxedo Black Memento inkpad
white twine
manual die-cutting machine
Clearly Besotted Friends Forever stamp set
Clearly Besotted Long Flag die
Clearly Besotted So Tweet Die Collection

We hope you have enjoyed today’s project courtesy of Amy Wanford. Be sure to stop by Amy’s blog to see even more of her beautiful work (and let her know we sent you).

Altenew Designer – Jennifer Rzasa

Today we welcome Jennifer Rzasa. We are so excited to have her showcase her work today on Paper Crafter’s Library. You can see Jennifer’s fabulous project below, but first, here is a little more about her:

JenniferRzasa-250W-04012015
Jennifer is an elementary music teacher living in Massachusetts, just outside of Boston.  Although she studied viola performance at Boston University and holds a master’s degree in education, her love of art has always been present in her life.  She “discovered” paper crafting in 2006, but it didn’t become a hobby until four years later when she started her blog, Our Change of Art.  Since then, she has been published in many paper crafting magazines, worked as a design team member for various companies, and hosts the Runway Inspired Challenge.

In addition to her paper crafting endeavors, Jennifer is a published illustrator, and enjoys painting fashion illustrations.  She is thrilled to be designing and illustrating for Altenew!

When she is not teaching or in her craft room, Jennifer can be found exploring the local food in Boston, riding her skateboard with her husband Dave, sewing costumes for video game and comic book conventions, or cooking at home.

Thinking Of  You Floral Card

With the help of a stamp positioner (Stamp-a-ma-jig), I created two identical cardstock panels.  Images from Striped Florals were stamped in black ink, and I also masked off the center flower for a layered look.  Once both panels were completed, I die cut a circle from one, and colored in the images on the other with Copic and Spectrum Noir markers.  I also trimmed down the die cut panel to be thinner than the front of a card base.

JenniferRzasa1-550W-04012015

Next, I created my card from white cardstock, and adhered the colored panel.   A strip of black and white striped cardstock was adhered along the side, followed by the die cut panel (with foam tape for dimension).

JenniferRzasa2-550W-04012015

The sentiment was stamped in VersaMark ink and embossed in white onto a strip of black cardstock, which was then adhered to the card with foam tape.  A few scattered sequins finish off the card!

Supplies

Cardstock (Solar White) Neenah, (black) PTI
Pattermed cardstock (black and white stripe) Making Memories Slice
Stamps (Striped Florals, Bejeweled) Altenew
Ink (Tuxedo Black) Memento, (watermark) VersaMark
Markers ( BV00, R29, RV17, RV13, G07, YG23, YG25) Copic, (PL2, PL4) Spectrum Noir
Dies (Circle Stax 1) MFT

We hope you have enjoyed today’s feature. We want to extend a sincere thank you to Jennifer Rzasa for her fabulous project and Altenew for sharing their company with us.

Trend Watch – Japanese Anime influence

I will admit, I am not much of a comic book fan but I can definitely get into the Anime trend.  If you don’t know what  I am talking about yet,  don’t worry.  I had to look it up on Wikipedia.  Japanese anime comes from Japanese animation movies inspired by comic books.  There are several themes from this trend you can see in several stamps.  Some of the characteristics that define this trend are an exaggerated eye;  either really wide and open or really small appearing only as a line.   Characters can have extreme, unnatural hair.  The facial expression are comedic or exaggerated.  These images are usually really colorful and graphic and have fantastic themes.  You will see characters dressed up as characters or cosplay (i.e. costume role play outside of the theatrical stage – another term looked up on wikipedia :))

A plus for the paper crafting world is this type of image just begs to be expertly colored, so break out your alcohol ink pens and colored pencils and prepare to be inspired.

I am a big fan of sushi and this first card is just adorable.  I love the idea of making an inanimate object, almost human with a little face.  Notice the cute expressions on the sushi.

Even though the tea cup in Lunarea’s card is small, it still takes center stage with her awesome watercolor work and the sweet expression on the cup’s face.

LF-CupofLove

Everything about this card says wake up and be a part of life!  Such a cute card with a great sentiment.  This guy is all pupils.  Must be high octane coffee.

Damaris has Copic marker skills in spades.  I just love how she changed the look of her character just by changing how she colored her.  She calls this look rock a billy.  Super cute.

Now Kristy is not only a Copic colorist extraordinaire, she is also the creative genius behind Some Odd Girl and many of the images in this post including the one below.  I love how she color dipped her character’s hair.

color challenge

Card by Kristy Dalman photo courtesy of Living the Odd Life

Anime influence can also be seen on male characters as well.  Rachel chose to color her character’s eyes green and he looks so mesmerizing.

happy birthday dude

card by Rachel Parys photo courtesy of Knee Deep in Paper

There is no other way to describe this card from Kerri other than sweet.  The cuteness factor just keeps notching up.  The eyes are just big pools you can swim in and she even characterizes the strawberry hat and heart wand.

Karber Strawberry copy

You see some of the cosplay come in on Danielle’s creation. The young girl dressed as a mouse is super cute and I have seen so many teens wearing those hat scraf combinations in animal characters.  A great teenage card.

I just love the old fashioned look of Indah’s character.  Her apron and pouty lips are the perfect combination with her homemade pie.  The bold colors in her paper selection are also beautiful.

If dress up is involved I think dressing up as a chef bringing delicious cupcakes would be a total win for me.  This is such a fun, colorful multilayered card.

It is not even possible for you to tell me that this is not adorable.  Judy created a box to put Band-Aid’s (plaster/adhesive strips or whatever you call them) in.  Again, the eyes, just look at the eyes.  They make you want to take care of the offensive owie.

The coloring skills in all of these paper crafts are just phenomenal.  The subject matter varies but you can see some of the commonalities in this trend.  Do you have any stamps that fit into this trend?  If not, I have a few suggestions with links for you to try them out for yourself.

So go ahead… make something pretty.

Featured Artist/Designer: Kristie Larsen 03 26 2015

Welcome to another Featured Artist/Designer Spotlight. Today we’re thrilled to welcome Kristie Larsen.

Before we show you Kristie’s project, let’s get to know her a little bit more…

KristieLarsenProfilePic-250W-04022015Hello my name is Kristie Larsen. My husband Patrick and I have four boys ages 10, 8, 5 and 3 and we currently reside in Singapore. I started paper crafting in 2008 when I was invited to my first SU! party. I went mostly to eat snacks and chat with my friends, but it did start something that hasn’t stopped since! I thoroughly enjoy card making (I’m not really a scrapbooker) and I love trying out new techniques. I tend to dabble in all kinds of styles. I usually want to keep it simple but there is something about layering and textures that gets my heart going. So once I start it just doesn’t stop! I started out abusing neutral shades of card stock and papers and now I can’t seem to live without bright colours in my projects. My style has evolved from just using stamps and ink to incorporating water-colour, stencils, sponging, die cuts and embossing paste!
I am currently on design teams for A Walk Down Memory Lane, CutCardStock.com and Sweet Stamp Shop.

I would consider myself a mom by day and a crafter by night. Rarely do the two mix. Do you know how messy boys can be!?  So its a crazy ninja, parkor, lego boy time in the day, and my crafting time comes when they are finally sleeping like little cherubs. Sometimes I can hardly wait for the sun to set and the bedtime routine to start! I love to listen to music (and I have been known to sing a note or two); I love pizza and pepsi light (that’s diet for you Westerners) and our weekly date night of movies and popcorn with my sweet husband of 15 years.
I am so thrilled to be joining you here are Paper Crafter’s Library! Thank you so much for having me!

Hello Card

My project incorporates some of my favorite things… embossing paste, stencils, embossing powder and glossy accents. Let me show you some of the things I love to do!

KristieLarsen1-550W-04022015

I started with an A2 panel of white card stock and covered it with a stencil and smeared in some white embossing paste.

KristieLarsen2step1-550W-04022015

After removing the stencil I covered it with Metallic Gold embossing powder and heated it with a heat tool. One of the things I LOVE about these two products together is that they start to bubble and rise when they are heated. It creates  this cool molten look, especially if you use some high impact embossing powder. It turns out really pretty and so fun to feel!

KristieLarsenstep2-550W-04022014

I stamped the flower image onto some Copic friendly paper and coloured away! After I finished, I layered on some Wink of Stella to add some shine. I also die cut my sentiment a few times and glued them together and then covered it with Glossy Accents for a nice shiny look as well. Everything about this card is shine and shimmer!

KristieLarsen4-550W-04022015

And after a little assembly with some foam adhesive, runners tape and more glossy accents, my card was complete! Thanks again much for the chance to be here. I had a great time creating!
xoxo
